In October 1962, president J.F. Kennedy visits Homestead AFB, Florida.
This base saw a lot of Air Force units flying in because of the
Cuban crisis. In the background you can see RF-101's which were
used to fly reconnaissance missions above Cuba.
Amongst
others the following units were ordered to be stationed at Homestead
AFB during the Cuban crisis:
- F-102 Delta Daggers (482nd Fighter Interceptor Squadron).
- F-106 (48th Fighter Interceptor Squadron)
- F-100's (31st Fighter Wing) Throughout the crisis, the wing maintained
constant air defense alert and for its critical role received its
second Air Force Outstanding Unit Award on 10 May 1963.
-

On
5 October 1969 Lieutenant Eduardo Guerra Jimenez landed MiG-17AS
number 232 at Homestead AFB, Florida. He didn't get intercepted
and landed without getting noticed. The base is subsequently put
on continuous alert, and opens a new tracking facility within a
few weeks in order to prevent the repetition of a similar incident
in the future.
