Its flight research programme having ended, the sole surviving XB-70 Valkyrie was flown from Edwards AFB, CA to Wright-Patterson AFB, OH to be preserved in the USAF museum.

  5 june

USAF bombers renewed their attacks on North Vietnam, the first since the ceasefire had been announced by President Johnson the previous November.
  8 july As part of the overall plan of 'Vietnamisation' - handing over to the South Vietnamese - coupled with the phased withdrawal of US forces from Vietnam, the first combat unit departed to the US in C-141A Starlifters from Tan San Nhut AB and returned to McChord AFB, WA.
  8 October The 340th Bombardment Group at Carswell AFB, TX received the first operational General Dynamics FB-111A (67-7193).
  3 November The USAF issued a call for proposals to meet the requirements of its advanced manned strategic aircraft (AMSA). The AF sought a high-subsonic, high altitude stand-off bomber, to be designated B-1.
  17 December
The USAF closed Project Blue Book, its 22-year investigation into unidentified flying objects (UFOs).
  23 December
The Defence Secretary announced McDonnell Douglas as the winner of the F-X air superiority fighter competition for a single-seat fighter, later named as the F-15 Eagle.
