were counted by pilots during August. Sixteen US aircraft were lost, ten
to enemy fighters and AAA and six to SAMs. |

rocket-powered North American X-15 research aircraft set the absolute world
speed record for non-orbiting manned aircraft. Launched from a Boeing B-52
carrier aircraft, the X-15 reached a speed of Mach 6.7 (4,543 mph) and a
height of 102,100ft. |

aircraft was delivered to the 474th TFW at Nellis AFB, NV. |
