Arc Light B-52 Stratofortress bombing missions finally reached the authorised level of 800 sorties per month.
  11 February An F-105 attack bomber flown by Captain Max Brestel shot down two MiG-17 fighters on a single mission.
  6 May Since the Arc Light operation began on 18 june 1965, B-52s had flown 10,000 sorties over Southeast Asia.
  10 March US pilots attacking targets in North Vietnam counted 80 SA-2 surface-to-air missile launches, a record for a single day in the war. In all, 149 SAMs were counted by pilots during August. Sixteen US aircraft were lost, ten to enemy fighters and AAA and six to SAMs.
  3 October
The rocket-powered North American X-15 research aircraft set the absolute world speed record for non-orbiting manned aircraft. Launched from a Boeing B-52 carrier aircraft, the X-15 reached a speed of Mach 6.7 (4,543 mph) and a height of 102,100ft.
  16 October
The first operational General Dynamics F-111A variable-geometry tactical strike aircraft was delivered to the 474th TFW at Nellis AFB, NV.
  23 October The Fighter Weapon Center at Nellis AFB, NV received the first F-4E Phantoms to enter Air Force service.
  29 December The last Boeing RB-47H (53-4296) was withdrawn from service with the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, Offut AFB, NE. This was the final operational flight made by a Startojet.
